Between 1928 and 1971, Pier 21 served as an immigration hall that processed over one million immigrants hoping to start a new life in Canada. Now a museum, the space features interactive displays, moving film footage about individual stories, extensive archive material, and a replica railcar. Visitors of immigrant descent can trace their own family’s journey via ships’ rosters.
This a casual spot is perfect for anyone who likes wings, burgers, and trying new beers. Just about a 15 minute stroll from the Harbour Walk, towards the center of town, you will come upon The Halifax Citadel. This site was the original fortress for colonists arriving from Great Britain in 1749. With its hilltop location providing the best vantage point, the community used the Citadel as a fortress to protect themselves against British troops. You can choose from a simple sightseeing Harbour Hopper tour, whale watching outings or sailing on a tall ship. We visited on the first week of September, and the summer season was stubbornly hanging on, much to our delight.

This picturesque estate is a lush, family-owned farm winery located in Wolfville, Nova Scotia – about an hour drive from Halifax Cruise Port. That might seem long but the drive is gorgeous – watch as the city and ships disappear and vineyards and hills take focus. If an indoor shopping mall is more up your alley, Atlantic Canada’s largest shopping mall – Halifax Shopping Centre – is located only 15 minutes by car from the port. Located at the mouth of the harbor and just a short water taxi ride from the Harbourwalk, you can head over to take a hike or history tour. Renting a car may also be a good idea if you wish to explore outside Halifax. You will dock at either Pier 20 or 22 at the Port of Halifax, which is located just south of downtown.
